On this week's episode Valerie Knight-DiGangi of The Valley Community Foundation stops by to encourage groups to apply for a VFC "responsive needs" grant, which are multi-year grants that can be used to bolster a nonprofit group's operating budget.

The deadline for "responsive needs" grant applications is Feb. 24, so head to the VCF website to learn more and to complete an application.

At about the 31 minute of the podcast, the topic switches to a recent debate that started during a meeting of the Ansonia Board of Apportionment and Taxation, when two Ansonia Democrats said the board only has five members when the city charter says there should be seven members.

Three students in Derby called for tougher gun regulations while students in Shelton carefully avoided making policy recommendations during separate events marking Wednesday’s “National School Walkout.”

Students all over the U.S. organized events at 10 a.m. March 14 to mark the one-month anniversary of the mass murder of 14 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

While the local “walkout” participants were anything but monolithic, the movement’s general goal is to end the mass shootings that seem to have become epidemic.

Valley Indy reporter Eugene Driscoll tries recording a Christmas-themed podcast with his 6-year-old son, Jack, and his 3-year-old daughter, Emma.

Driscoll's wife is there, at least in spirit, in the form of an angry voicemail played at the start of the episode.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, everybody.

Back in the year 2000 or so, New York City real estate tycoon Donald Trump was trying to build a golf course on the shores of Byram Lake, the drinking water for the Village of Mount Kisco, N.Y. about 45 miles north of the city.

Valley Indy reporter Eugene Driscoll, then a reporter with The Patent Trader, a weekly newspaper in Westchester County, N.Y., conducted a phone interview with Trump.

Driscoll found the cassette recording in a shopping bag in his basement in mid-November, and he and reporter Ethan Fry decided to turn the old recording into a podcast, complete with commentary.

Enjoy.

Donald Trump won the popular vote in the lower Naugatuck Valley, and voters threw out two incumbent Democrats on the state level.

Yet they also voted for one of the most progressive members of the U.S. House of Representatives -- Rosa DeLauro -- and they chose to stick with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, another Democrat.

In this episode of "Navel Gazing: The Valley Indy Podcast," Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller, a Republican, and Ansonia's Tarek Raslan, a Democrat, join local reporters Eugene Driscoll and Ethan Fry for a wide-ranging discussion on the state and federal races, and where the country goes from here.
